In this four-class series, students will learn the basics of wheel throwing and hand-building with clay.
Class 1: Introduction to Wheel Throwing
· Cutting, weighing, and wedging clay
· Centering on the wheel, setting the depth of the piece, and opening the clay
· Pulling clay to create cylindrical forms
Class 2: Introduction to Wheel Throwing
· Trimming, carving, and decorating with underglaze
· Continuing to practice throwing – if students finish trimming, carving, and under glazing early, there might be time to practice on the wheel. Anything thrown will be for practice purposes only and not kept.
Class 3: Hand-building a lidded pot
· Using clay slabs, students will learn to hand-build a lidded pot
· Measuring and cutting pieces for the body, foot, and lid
· Learning how to “slip and score” to join pieces together
· Decorating with inlay rollers, stamps, carving, and underglaze
** In between weeks 3 and 4 students’ work will go through the Bisque fire to prepare for glazing!**
Class 4: Glazing all work
· Learning to prepare all bisque work for glaze (sanding, cleaning, waxing)
· Glazing with a selection of over 30 glazes and even more glaze combinations!
** Finished work will be ready for pick up two weeks after final class**
